At my parent’s house in Switzerland there is still a very large collection of small clay figures (santons), made during the course of my childhood. These formative years in contact with ceramic deeply influenced my artistic process.
Twelve years ago I joined the JCC ceramic studio in Manhattan.
Early on, I focused on hand built objects, creating candle vessels with shapes and textures of ice and coral. White porcelain was the perfect fit. I am also sculpting 3D “portraits”, often mounted on a wall, seemingly floating, or assembled in a group. Experimenting with layers of glaze, I am firing the heads a few times to reach the desired textures and subtle colors.
Mostly tattooed, these little sculptures are staged in intimate settings. They can be dressed with fabrics, found objects or recycled jewelry, carefully collected throughout the years. These contemporary icons are infused with art history, cultural history, folk tales and people stories. Like a time traveler, this is my collection of lives.
